What is a Dental Bridge?
Dental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being, yet it's often overlooked until we encounter a problem. One such issue is missing teeth, which not only affects your smile but also your ability to chew and speak properly. But don't worry, modern dentistry has a solution for you: Dental Bridges.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge, as the name suggests, bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It comprises two or more crowns on either side of the gap — these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth — and a false tooth/teeth in between. The false teeth are known as pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.
- Dental bridges can restore your smile
- They can restore the ability to properly chew and speak
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth
- Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
Types of Dental Bridges
There are four main types of dental bridges: traditional, cantilever, Maryland, and implant-supported.
- Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. They are the most common type of dental bridges.
- Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
- Maryland bonded bridges (also called a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge) are made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal or porcelain framework.
- Implant-supported bridges use dental implants as opposed to crowns or frameworks. Typically, one implant is surgically placed for every missing tooth, and these implants hold the bridge in position.
The Process of Getting a Dental Bridge
At Monsoon Dental, we use CAD/CAM milling to create precise and comfortable restorations for bridges. The process begins with preparation of the abutment teeth, which involves recontouring these teeth by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them.
Next, impressions of the teeth are made, which serve as a model from which the bridge, pontic, and crowns will be made. While the bridge is being made, a temporary bridge will be put in place to protect the exposed teeth and gums.
Caring for Your Dental Bridge
Once your dental bridge is in place, it's important to keep it and your remaining teeth healthy and strong. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease that can lead to tooth loss. Regular check-ups and cleanings are also a must.
- Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque and prevent tooth decay
- Eat a balanced diet for proper nutrition
- Regular dental check-ups and cleanings
- Avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects, such as pencils, which can damage your crowns
