They may be worse in the morning — consistent with nighttime grinding and clenching — or worsen throughout the day as jaw muscles fatigue. Patients frequently report that the headaches are accompanied by jaw tenderness, facial soreness, or a clicking or popping sensation when opening the mouth. Ear fullness, tinnitus, and neck stiffness are also commonly reported alongside TMJ-related head pain. The value of identifying TMJ dysfunction as a headache contributor is that it opens a path to treatment that addresses the underlying cause rather than just masking the pain. A custom-fitted stabilization appliance worn at night can dramatically reduce the muscle tension and joint loading that generate referred head pain for many patients. Targeted jaw exercises and physical therapy techniques help normalize muscle function and range of motion. Bite adjustments, where appropriate, address the occlusal imbalances that place asymmetric stress on the joint. These interventions do not suppress pain artificially — they reduce the mechanical and neuromuscular drivers that are producing it.
